How to Export an Ontology
You can export an Ontology for later importing it into another 3RDi setup or for maintaining backups or for sharing with external systems.
The following are the steps to export an Ontology:
- Select the Ontology you wish to export. (Refer Browsing the List of Ontologies and Selecting One).
- Open the Ontology Concept Editor by double clicking on the Ontology name.
- On the right extreme of the Right Panel, you would see a 'wrench’ icon. Click on it. The context menu will have multiple options. Select the ‘Export’ option.
- The ‘Export’ pop-up will open as below.
- You need to make some selections here.
- (What to) import:
- File type:
- File format:
- If you select ‘Predicates’ option on this pop-up, a ‘Next’ button will appear (which is not present if you select ‘Ontology’).
Select ‘Ontology’ if you wish to export the full Ontology and select ‘Predicates’ if you only wish to export data of a few predicates.
Select ‘Excel’ or SKOS as desired..
Excel ‘File Type’ option has only one format for export. This format matched the Excel (Recommended) import format. This means that the file exported though Excel export option can be imported as Excel (Recommended).
For SKOS, there are multiple serialization formats. Chose the one you prefer. Turtle (ttl) is recommended since it’s the most compact yet equally readable format.
Click on ‘Next’ to select the Predicates for exporting. In the view, predicates are grouped by schemes they belong to. Move to the appropriate Scheme and select the predicates. You can select predicates across multiple Schemes..
It is not mandatory to choose Predicates and if you skip this selection, all the Predicates will be exported.
- Click ‘Export’ to start the export.
- After a while a file will be downloaded to your system. You can find it in ‘downloads’ folder on you Windows machine. The time taken to exporting an Ontology (or Predicates) depends on its size. Export of a large ontology with thousands of concepts may take a few minutes. So, before trying to Export again, wait for some time.
